CUIABA: Jackson Martinez of Colombia scored twice and helped Colombia to beat Japan 4-1 to end
World Cup Group C with three straight wins and send the Asian champions
out of the tournament with just one point.
It also became historical match when Farid Mondragan beat Roger Milla´s record as
the oldest player at any finals tournament, with age 43 years and three days.
Defeat was started for Japan after 15 minutes when Yasuyuki Konna drop down
Adrian Ramos in the penalty area Fiorentina striker Juan Cuadrado confidently hit the kick past Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima
German-based
striker Shinji Okazaki tried an overhead kick after 35 minutes but his attempt went marvelously high. However, he got fortune again when he scored in the first-half with a fine diving.
Substitute Rodriguez found Martinez scored in 55 minutes in space on the edge of
the penalty area and the Porto striker powered a low angled shot into
the corner.
However Japan didn't lose hope they were still struggling, Honda pressed a powerful free kick at Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina.
Defender Yasuyuki Konno also cleared the Colombia defence with a shot from
the edge of the area that Ospina covered.
But Martinez added a
second and Rodriguez pestered the Japanese defence before splintering the
ball over Kawashima to snatch
victory.
