Football World Cup 2014 Brasil : Costa Rica took their historical victory at Recife
RECIFE: Costa Rica reached quarter final for the first time in their history after beating 10-man Greece through a strained penalty decider by 5-3, on Sunday in Football World Cup 2014, Recife.
Costa Rica took the lead when the Tico's captain scored and also put away his penalty as the Central Americans was controlling their nerves and pressure win the decider 5-3.
After second half, on full time, the scores were levelled and also Sokratis Papastathopoulos canceled out Ruiz´s goal in last minute to take an extra time but that was also ended goalless.
Fanis Gekas made Greek players disappointed and put pressure on them because he had got his penalty blocked by the keeper and Michael Umana scored fifth to have historical victor for his country Costa Rica..
The shot by Ruiz, whose headed goal sank Italy in the key Group D battle, was much succeeded. But Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and his defence seemed to stand still and blocked the attacking.
The goal brought Greece out of their shells and the pressure began to tell on the Costa Ricans.
Greece had further half-chances through Gekas and Kostas Katsouranis before a golden chances to win it arrived in the second half of extra time.
There was to be further drama before the penalties had even begun as Greece manager Fernando Santos was sent off.
Oscar Duarte brought down Jose Holebas in the 62nd minute and his second yellow card meant his instant banishing.
Now Greek will meet Netherland in super eight as they got chance for the first time to involve in the clash of quarter-finals
